I am considering a new 4Runner but am concerned about the power from the 4.0 six cylinder engine. I pull my Sabre in the Ozarks and the mountains in Southeastern Oklahoma. Will I struggle up the hills? I have also been considering the Lexus with the 4.7 eight cylinder engine. I have been told that neither of these vehicles will pull satisfactorily. Any thoughts? I currently am very happy with my Tahoe but it is time to replace it and I dont care for the new Tahoes or Yukons and I need an SUV.
my $.02yes there is an issue of “pulling” but the main issue would be stopping. i had a buddy that towed a camper (28-30ft) with a regular cab 5 speed 6cyl ranger (what an idiot). i think it is more of a safety issue on the stopping rather than the pulling. just my opinion, im sure there will be others that can elaboratebrad
While the Sabre isnt a real heavy rig, Id be leery about pulling with a smaller SUV. I had a 17 Venture for a while back in the 90s. I pulled it with an S10 Blazer with a 4.3 6 cyl. It pulled just “okay” in the flat lands of Indiana, but in the hills it really bogged down and stopping it was a major challenge sometimes. If you didnt have to pull it very far, you would probably be okay. What is the towing rating for the 4Runner?
Just my personal opinion. I would not want to pull a bass boat with a 6 cylinder, especially up hills. Keep in mind I am the type of person that tends to be heavy on the gas. I have an F150 ford ext cab 4×4 w/ the small v8 and I wish I had the large v8. It does ok on speed but does not give me the power I want when going up hills or passing another vehicle.
I wouldnt want to use anything with less than 5k lb. rating for towing. imho…..Although i think the 4.0 litre, or the 4.7 would pull fine, others are correct, it isnt so much the pulling as it is the stopping, and control issues in an emergency.
YES you will struggle up those hills. You will be over in the slow lane letting me pass.I have a 5.7L Suburban. It will grunt pulling my PII on some of those long Ozark foot hills.I could never think of going smaller.Caddy 4.7L northstar had the power but milage dropped like a rock.Lexas probably same power as the escalade but get out your billfold.
A LOT WOULD DEPEND ON THE GEAR RATIO ON THE LEXUS. THE POWER IS THERE BUT YOU NEED THE GEAR RATIO ON THE REAR END AS WELL AS THE TRANSMISSION MY .02 WOULD BE THE LEXUS WOULD BE FINE.
My wife has a new 4 Runner. As of yet I have not hitched up my Puma to it to see if it makes the cut. It does however run very good. Since I generally tow with a Super Duty Diesel, I am probably going to be real hard on the Toyota doing a good job. My thoughts about most of the answers you have received are that these guys are not aware of the fact that Toyota has changed the 2010 4 Runners and they are indeed a larger vehicle and a larger motor. They do not have a V-8 option at this time. But, I want to think they would compare more to the Trailblazer in towing than the Tahoe.
The 4runner actually does fine. I have been in one pulling a PII and it was respectible. Of course it wasnt a Big Block Chevy but I was impressed enough that It crossed my mine to try one..I think it would be fine pulling a Sabre. But if you think it will do any better on fuel than a full size ( I.E. Tahoe, Yukon) it will not. Thats what changed my mind and went with a Yukon. More power and surprisingly decent fuel economy.Just my opinion.Mike
I pulled my Sabre with a 3.4 liter Toy for two years and now the 4.7 liter lexus tuned in an 05 Tundra. The Tundra with the 4.7 is awesome while the 3.4 liter got the job done it was a slug going up hill or passing other vehicles. I have a Nissan with a 4.0 that is really stout….I have not pulled boat with it but have pull my 5×14 foot trailer with two Artic Cats and a long weekend of camping supplies to Ozark AR with no troubles at all. Either would be fine and you do have trailer brakes…just maintain them well.ElwoodElwood…..Bass Cat Proud
