Trailer Ball Height

Top of the ball should be 19″ on todays trailers. 18″ on those older than 2000.

I sincerely regret mis-stating the ball height. When I originally responded, I measured the height on my wife’s Trailblazer, with a 4″ drop, and it was 15″. This vehicle has 16 inch wheels. I have been towing with this rig for 3 years as a back-up vehicle.

Anyway, I measured my 2006 Z-71 EXT pick-up just now, and it is 18.5″ to the top of the ball. I have a 5″ drop on it. This has 17″ Bridgestone tires and factory aluminum wheels.

I have a new Tahoe(2007) and just picked up my New Puma. I used a 2″ drop on my old boat(2001 Bullet and 2003 Ford Expedition). Wasn’t even close, Dealer gave me a 4″ drop and that was still alitlle bit high(towed it 7 hours home). I purchase a 5 1/4″ drop and that is perfect. It would appear that the Tahoe is the same height as the Expedition when looking at them when they are parked next to each other but it is not so. The Tahoe is definetly higher in the rear!! Hope this helps ya!!

The new body style is definitely considerably taller.

My 2001 Suburban Z-71 is 18 1/2″ high with a 2″ drop, so definitely the new Tahoe is higher. I think it’s more where the hitch is actually mounted rather than the bumper itself. Mine is mounted below the bumper while the new Tahoe and Suburban have an “in-bumper” mount.

Yes, I have a 2007 Yukon. I had to buy a 6 inch drop to get a level towing attitude. They definately threw us a curve ball putting the reciever up there in the bumper instead of under it. I will say it does a nice job of towing though. I find it better than my extended cab GMC truck. Go with a six inch drop and you will be fine!!

Guys,

Be careful on recommending the drop height for hitches.

Try suggesting top of ball height for many reasons. Different vehicles by year, model and etc., People change tires and wheels from factory, Two (2) wheel drive verses Four (4) wheel drive, different ball heights and extended balls.

If you recommend the ball height to the top on level surfaces, you covered all variables.

Sorry about that, I went out to the Garage and measured my top of ball height. It is 19 1/2 inches to top of ball. This is probably still a little on the high side but I have had no problems at all towing with this.

Thanks for all the responses. I measured the top of the ball for my last Tahoe(2005) it was 15″ from the ground with a 3″ drop. I put the 3″ drop in the new Tahoe and measured and it was 22″ to the ground. That said I think I need a 10″ drop. This truck has 20″ tires and wheels. I am looking at one of the adjustable ones. The solid bars have a trailer weight rating of 6000 pounds. I think this should be enough.

Any thoughts??
