Trailer tire question

For starters, are you looking at automobile tires or trailer tires?  On the 2007 P2 that I had (dual axle trailer) it had 14″ tires, those lovely Goodyear Marathons.  I had one go bad and replaced all of them with Greenball Tires that I bought from a Sams Club.  Greenball on their site stated at the time that the tires had warranty to 70 mph, most do not.  I never had a problem with them after I put them on.  If you look them up now you will see that they have some that have over a 2,000 rating per tire for 14 inch.  When you are looking at 14″ or 15″ tires you need to be concerned about overall height of the tire/wheel assembly when you install it for clearance between the tire, the fender and the trailer.  Some 14s and 15s are the same height/width and for the most part, carry the same weight.  It is when you go up or down in sizes that the fun starts.  My P2 had 205 75 14s on it I believe, I do not know what the size is on yours. Also make sure you do not mix bias ply tires with radial tires, as well as auto tires with trailer tires.  Whatever you choose to run make sure you have 3 of the same.  Good luck with this.

Looking at trailer tires.  The ones on it are the originals according to the 2 previous owners.  They aren’t date stamped and that became a requirement in 2000.  If I had a tandem axle trailer, I’d just go get some matching 14 inch tires.  But this single axle needs better tires.  The current ones are 215/75 R14.  The 15” tires are slighlty wider (225/75 R15).  I should have room to fit them, but won’t have much.

I’ll have to look at that website.  I haven’t been able to find any that satisfy me.  The boat weighs 1350, motor is 450 or so. 36 gallons of fuel, tackle/rods, and trailer weight are over 2000 lbs.  Best 14” tires I could find were rated for right at 2000.  Thats too close to the minimum for me.

Went to local tire shop and tried some 15” tires.  Couldn’t fit them without removing the fiberglass fenders or trying to move them.  Didn’t want that hassle, so I put some good 8 ply 14” tires on.  Should be good to go now.

ObiWan current boat I own is a 2017 Cougar AE, tandem trailer currently with General Altrex P22570R15 on it.  Each tire is rated at 1764 lbs, they are a car tire.  Went back on Greenball’s web site.  The 215 14″ tire is rated for 2200 lbs, the 225 15″ tire is rated for either 2540 or 2830.  One is a load range D tire (like the 14″ one) the other is a load range E tire.  Hope this helps.  The tire is the Mirage Special Trailer Radial.

2 of the 2000 lbs tires will carry 4000 lbs.   Its 2000 pounds per tire.  Unless your running one tire, you more than good to go.

Correct.  But the ones I had were C load tires.  Personally, I wanted something better.  I went with 14” D1 tires and it is much better.  Wheels are original 1999 wheels, so all they need is a good polish now.
