BCB: Good information. Ive never had em split, but then I have never been tempted to over-tighten them either. My son could split a lock nut made out of diamond I think. Keep telling him to go easy and use a torque wrench, but youngsters of today dont have that kind of time to waste. I have used stainless lock nuts, but have found them _much_ harder to find, except at the stainless supply house I mentioned earlier. 1/2″ bolts are not so common at our big box stores around here, and decent locking nuts are rarer yet, usually being the plated variety of non-stainless. The only real problem I have seen is using coarse threads on the engine-to-plate mounting, where they seem to vibrate loose easier than the fine-thread bolts.
