Only comment I have is that (a) I have used MK and MG, MG for the last 25 years, where I switched to MK when I bought my current classic. Adjusting to the MK takes some time. Old dog, new tricks and all that. Was used to digital speed control on left, on/off button on right. MK is backward. Took a few weeks to get into the MK mode, kept wondering why the boat was not doing what I was telling it to do, when in reality I was telling it to “drift wherever you want” since I was pressing on the speed control (now on right)… And of course adjusting the speed by using ball of right foot does not work either.Otherwise Ive been happy with the MK 80# troller on my classic. Fished with someone that had an auto-deploy / auto-stow motor and I was not so impressed when it blew a fuse the first day and we could not get it to auto-stow or auto-deploy, manual is a bit of a pain on that thing. I am 68 and my Maxxum 80 doesnt give me any trouble. I am just careful in how I grab and pull to use the right muscle groups, excluding my back. Stowing is easier.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
I owned 1 MK on an older cat, and went back to MG because of the backwards controls. Like Oldtimer57 said, Old dog new tricks. The Equalizer works very well for me, as it probably dropped the weight in half, or so it seems and was a lot cheaper than a new motor.
do not understand the weight issue. Almost like the motor housing is made of cast iron or something. Did learn that at least on older MGs I needed to disassemble the motor housing every few years and clean/check the o-rings on each end. Once they crack or deform, it is all over. Will probably check the MK during the winter layover to see how it looks internally. Also need to figure out what to use to repaint the housing. Where it lays when stowed has worn the paint and there is rust there. My wife looked at me this morning and said “you like working on that thing about as much as you like fishing in it, dont you?” Had to consider that answer VERY carefully. “maybe, when there is nothing else I have on my list to do” was all I could come up with that had any probability of my survival. Tried to explain to her that I bought a boat with a lifetime hull warranty so I dont have to worry about the transom wanting to fall off (had that problem with my first boat, given to me by my dad. He thought it was perfectly OK to drill holes all over the transom trying to find the best place to mount one of the very early humminbird LCD depth-finders when the old flashers were the thing everyone used.) That the motor still has 2 1/2 years of warranty left, all I need to do is basic Maint (fixing to drain L/U and replace fluid if no water is visible, almost certainly will replace water pump while it is freezing outside, etc.) The trailer has been another matter, but I finally got the brakes back up to snuff and finished cutting the bunks out today. Just need something above the 40 degree high today to use the contact glue to install the carpet. Pretty tired of the cold already after the 70 degree stuff two weeks ago. I dont fix things that dont need fixing, but I dont ignore things that do, or things that are unknown.Had enough trouble learning to use a hand throttle again after 25 years of hotfoot. And I often reach for the “blinker” to adjust the tilt, although this Cat doesnt have one. Might make that my next project, who knows? We need a federal law that says if someone over the age of 60 trades boats, the new one has to operate the same way as the old one. Need to sic Trump on that. 2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
If you have a back or neck problem as I have had, a small amount of weight can become a big deal especially in rougher water.
Thanks, guys! I have a terrible back and neck plus I fish Lake of the Ozarks. The Coast Guard named it the roughest lake water in the country. Having fished all over the US, I have found that statement to be true. I will look over the Equalizer before I consider changing trollers.Wizard
