using 34 size trolling motor batteries?

I am looking at Sams clubs Duracell AGMs for replacing my 3 trolling motor batteries and am looking at either the AGM 27M or the AGM 34M. The 27M is $40 more and has less everything then the 34M except for RC and Amp hours rate (27s have 175 RC & 92 amp hr Vs the 34s 120 RC and 55 amp hour rate). Is it worth the extra $40 to get the 27M over the 34M? Again, this is for the trolling motor, not the cranking battery. I currently have three Everstart Maxx-29DC for my 36 volt TM. 34M are normally starting batteries not deep cycle. Based on the specs I think the 34M is a cranking battery.We have the Duracell 27Ms. We can go 8 plus hours on our trolling motor and still have 75% to 80% of a full charge. What are you cranking? An opti is a power hog and needs a lot of amps. Motor has to spin three revolutions to build up enough pressure in the air rails to light the motor off. Heavy draw for a significant amount of time can be a problem when the battery is too weak. Merc recommends at least 800 cca, and this is for MOTOR ONLY. If you have other stuff hung off that battery, such as sonar, dash, pumps, lights, etc, you want something closer to 1000 CCA. The 34m doesnt even meet the minimum 800cca number. If you are cranking a BRP/Yamaha I cant say what they need. But that is going to cause LOTS of low voltage alarms on an opti and probably leave you stranded at the end of a day.

OT I think you misread his post…hes looking for trolling motor battery recommendations between these two.So long as they are “deep cycle” they could be considered for the troller. If they are starting battery or cranking use they may not hold up as long or fully recover from extended drawing use.

look at the RC rating. this is the reserve current or capacity for those long days on the water. or get a solar panel and wire it in

If you are wanting AGM stay with the 27’s,

Your Everstart 29s (which are the same physical size and capacity as group 31) have a RC of 210 minutes. The group 24s that you are considering have a meager 120 minutes, which is just over half of what you now have, and much too small. Go with the 27s, which have the RC of 175, or the 31 AGMs which have a RC of 210 minutes like you now have. The larger batteries should have a longer life cycle as well because the average depth of discharge will be less, assuming your fishing style does not change. Make sure your charger is compatible if going with AGMs. Those Sams AGM batteries are made by Deka/kEast Penn, and are good batteries for the troller.

When I saw the “and” I thought he was talking about a cranking battery also. I would go with group 27 or 31 for TM, however, not the 34. Its a little weak on AH capacity.

I ended up getting 3 Duracell size 27 AGMs for the troller. The everstarts are moving from the cat to my electric only tracker. thanks all for your input.

Note that those are made by East Penn / Deka. Harder to find the equivalent cranking battery, but if you go to Oreillys auto parts, their store-brand marine batteries are the SAME exact battery without the gold duracell label. 🙂 Similar price to Sams, which is where I bought my group 27 TM batteries… The group 27 cranking battery from OReilly is really stout. I have yet to get a low-voltage alarm when cranking…
