Topic: Walleye Fishing In Canada

Heading up to Canada (Manitoba) for some walleye and pike fishing. This will be my first trip. Most the people I am going with suggest using 15lb test with a steel leader. The lakes are very clear but most of the walleye fishing is trolling and the pike fishing is more casting. Any suggestions on line? Braid or Mono? With Braided line would a steel leader be neccessary? Any comments would be apprectiated. Thanks, Jeff

I like 30lb power pro with a leader either steel of heavy flouro. For walleyes use 10lb xt for trolling and 6lb crystal or sensation solar for jigging. Walleye fishing has been unreal here (Lake Winnebago) as well as pike. Let us know how you do!Last edited by richstadler on July 16th, 2008, 12:44 am, edited 1 time in total.

I caught most of my nice ones (30″ to 36″) on 8 lb test McCoys while smallmouth fishing. I lost a lot of grubs to them. They didnt chew through the 17lb test XT nearly as often, but I didnt get as nice a fish either.

Im heading up north of Kenora, Ontario on the English River system on Friday. Been going up there for 15 years. Always have used 8 lb test, recently converting to P-Line Fluorocarbon. Never needed anymore than 8 lb, we troll and drift with half oz. jig heads tipped with minnow or leech. As for Pike go with 15 lb. whatever with a steel leader. Pike fishing is crazy up there, every cast. Ive heard the smallmouth could be spawning up there or have just finished. Dont for get the smallmouth goodies.

Those pike sure arent finiky. Dont worry about visibility, fish the heaviest stuff youre comfortable with and a steel leader. Smallies and walleyes arent as nuts as pike. Wish I was going with you, I miss those northern lakes. Have a great and safe trip.
