Which prop is best for puma w/merc 225 pro xs?

I was wondering if anyone knows which prop is best for the puma with a 225hp merc. pro xs. I like tempest myself but I hear alot of guys running trophies. What pitch 25 or 26? Anyone have any recomendations or comments? Thanks.

I am running an 07 with a 225 proXS with a detwiler jack plate, I run a 26p trophy, it will turn 5950-6000 rpms, top end is just over 75 mph so far, I only have about 10 hrs on it so I have not done much in the line of tweeking on it, it runs good and handles good with this set up, I may try a 27p for the cold weather months but the 26 does a good job so far.

Search this board for this topic. I have provided feedback on several different threads.My best was 74.7 GPS with a 27″ Trophy, standard jackplate, Puma DC with 225 Pro XS. Second best was 74.0 GPS even with a 26″ Tempest.The 25″-26″ Trophies are good, all-around props year-round, and will serve you well regardless of conditions or load.If you have a manual plate, set engine height approximately 3.25 below pad. If you get it too high, the hull wont lift.Good luck, and email if you want.Gary Hollander

I running an 06 Puma w/Merc 22 ProXS on a hydrolic plate. Current best top end is 73 even. Im still working on finding the correct engine height. I think that I may yet get 74 !I went with the 27P on Garys recommendation. However, most of the folks I have spoken with seemed to think the 27P was a mistake, but I am well pleased. Hole shot is the best I have ever had on any boat, and I am pleased with acceleration. I have been surprised to find out that these Pumas seem to like a low set engine. No matter how I load, my boat runs best with the plate moved to its lowest position.

Lance,Im glad that the 27″ Trophy worked out good for you. I was very satisfied with the overall performance from the 27″ Trophy on my Puma/225 Pro Xs rig as well–holeshot and acceleration.When it comes to set-up, the conventional wisdom always says that I am wrong. I ran a 27 Pitch Tempest this past weekend on my Puma and 225 XS. Hole shot suffered just a little but think I was running the wrong vent plugs. Was running the small holes and am going to try the large holes this next weekend. I have the jack plate set about 1/8 up from the bottom and think I need to go down 1 or 2 turns. Motor was blowing out if I got in the trim to much. Over all performance was great, mid range punch was excellent and had her running a little over 74 on GPS. Is the bext prop I have run so far. Think I am going to order a 27 Trophy for this rig and those are the 2 props I will run. Gary, Thanks again for all your help with setting this boat up. For the most part you have been dead on !!!! Great boat and motor combination. Thanks
