Who has traded a boat in?

When I traded for a Bass Cat I talked to 4 or 5 dealers. Some told me straight up they were not interested in a trade, others made it pretty obvious from the price they gave me but were willing to sell me a boat while allowing me to give them mine. LOL!! I finally found a dealer that would trade with me for a figure I could live with. I have traded with him twice with no complaints. If I decide to trade again you can bet I will check with Sherm first!Dan

Dealerships and trades are a long term challenge. Some do not have the capital or the financing for used boats in inventory. Those that do are going to be a little more in percentage than a vehicle trade as they generally have to retain the boat for eventual sale. Often car dealers can wholesale the car/truck at a nominal number to eliminate it and thus (1) used car dealers pick up the used inventory, or they can sell it clean if they are in a position to old it in (2) their used car inventory, or they can go to the (3) auction market with the vehicle. Boats do not have quite the access to used inventory options and even if they are in range of an auction house they have to transport it one at a time and take their time to do it. They have no interest in rotating inventory sold at the auction and its a day taken just to sell a used boat. Holding it on site requires they retain it waiting on the next potential owner, and detailing it and servicing it for sale is a more expensive equation to them than a vehicle. Thus boat trades are always a different situation. We do endorse boat trades and we would like to help in this process. Just not sure exactly how it improves without some challenges, infrastructure and costs. All things we are considering daily.

I obviously wanted to trade versus buying out right. I did realize that would cost me a few $$$ but honestly I was surprised at the trades I was eventually given. I also have more respect for a dealer that tells me upfront they can not trade than one that acts like he is giving me a great deal and at the same time offering me 45 to 55 cents on the dollar regarding my trade. I would not contact him on a boat again I do not care how long he has been in business or how highly regarded he is on the net. It is like I told him ” I am neither that stupid nor that Rich”Dan

I know you are frustrated with your wiring issues. But if you like the boat it would be cheaper to take it to the dealer and have them fix it. Even if that ment getting a new elec harness from Bass Cat and a new larger battery. Electrical issue can be very hard to find. When they think they have it fixed have them go to the lake with you. Hope it turns out well.

Toadrustler, here is some cheap advise, I would go into a few dealerships, like you have done, get what they want to give you for your rig, if they will take it at all, and then I would check out the price on the NADA sheet and stick it up for sale, both on line here and possibly whatever other site that you trust. I would price it so that it moves, if you are serious about getting rid of it, and then move on to the dealership to price out a new one and order it. I have seen many boats “fly” off this board, Jags and P4s in particular. Also some dealerships might have some resources that they would “share” with you for a price, but you are going to have to ask. Bottom line is, it is getting to that time of the year for boat shows and people are going to start to get the itch to buy very quickly. Good luck with everything.
