X2 Lithium BassCat Pantera Classic

My batteries in my Classic are dead. I'm looking at different options for new batteries. I went to Batteries Plus today and looked at the X2 Lithium batteries that they have. Granted, I'd have to have a lithium battery charger, but otherwise, I like:

Much Lighter
Really good endurance
10 year warranty

Question is: If I go with a 27 series X2 Lithium as the cranking battery, is that a problem with the 85 amp alternator from the Mercury sending charging power to the battery? Will this battery last, with that alternator charging the battery each time I move? Will the battery get overcharged this way? Alternatively, I was thinking about going high-end AGM from the cranking battery and X2 Lithium for the trolling batteries. Thoughts and suggestions?

Mercury doesn’t recommend the Lithium for the two stroke. That said, many two stroke owners have installed the lithiums and are having no problems with them as a cranking battery myself included.

Just had same dilemma. Several have made the switch like the above & can be just fine. The problem arises when your voltage regulator goes out & you put out more than 14.8-15 volts, the lithium can’t take it. On my 08 175 proxs service tech checked & a fine 14.5volts, but can go up to 20 without the regulator & while running & not knowing it can get so hot it can melt a hole through the hull. He said he has seen it. I went with a Pro-Guide AGM 31MX1150. Hope that helps.

Could use more info. Current version of Classic or previous version? 2 or 4 stroke? Belly tank, duel rear tanks, tank just behind live well? Kicker tank? Mercury, Yamaha, ‘Rude? HP? Model year? Weight of Lithium is double edge sword. Yes, less weight but they also changes the dynamics of the hull designed for the weight of flooded or AGM batteries in bilge.

I had Optima’s in my last boat and they actually lasted 10 years. My Caracal came with a Pro Guide 31 starting battery which weighed 70 lbs and died in 2 1/2 years.

I bought an Optima D31T and it’s 60 pounds so there’s a 10 pound savings. I may run another in front of or next to it in parallel to help run the graphs x3, power poles, lights, bilge pump etc. (we don’t use the livewells) but we’ll first see how well the single Optima handles all of that.

I very much appreciate all of the responses.

After review, I also found that, if I went with lithium, I would need to change battery chargers, or, have my charger upgraded by Duel Pro. I decided not to go thru all of that.

I ended up with the X2 AGM for the cranking battery and I went with Duracell Utra 31s for the trolling motor batteries. The X2 was about $450 and the two Duracell Ultras were about $250 each.

I really like the idea of having batteries that I never have to worry about running out of juice, but there’s so many issues with lithium, it just doesn’t make sense for me.
