Hey there Mike,Jerk baits sound good to me, too, but I havent been down to the lake yet (Im jealous!). Hard plastic jerk baits like Thundersticks or Long As are often good for forcing a bite when fish arent in a feeding mood, which, with the water as cold as it is and this early in the year, is probably what youll be up against. (Lipless cranks might also work the same way.) Here is a link for a Missouri fishing blog that I enjoy reading: http://kennysgreatoutdoors.blogspot.comSo far this year, hes only been to Truman, but that may help you a bit with your LOZ bait choices. Check his blog often, and read the previous posts– youll enjoy them. Good luck!Cheers,Scott
Mike,How did fishing go this weekend? What condition is the lake in? Im getting antsy to get down there myself. Cheers,Scott
Put an accessory switch there– you never know what you might want to turn on and off at the bow after you get the boat set up! I fished out of several of these original P2s in the 90s, and the hull was incredible. I remember my dad fishing a BASS tournament at Thousand Islands, NY on the St. Lawrence River and Bassmaster filmed him (this was pre-ESPN ownership) and several other boats heading out into the mouth of Lake Ontario hitting 3 & 4 white caps– his was the only boat shown that didnt spear a single wave. This was (I think) the Thousand Islands Eastern Invitational from 97 that aired in early 98 if anybody has the tape. The following summer we went up there on vacation and fished in Dads new Jaguar and tore up the smallies waaaaay out in Ontario and ran across 6-8 foot swells on the way back to the river– that experience STILL remains the absolute most fun Ive had riding in a bass boat. Cheers,Scott
On the original Jag I used that passenger compartment a lot, and I never had that problem, mainly because the lid had enough clearance that it opened past vertical and just rested against the gunwale. Youd have had to kick the opposite side to make it shut hard enough to do damage and your rod would have had to be sticking out in a way that would have been begging for trouble no matter what. It looks to me like the new box is larger and has some design improvements, and it looks like the lid opens similarly, so Id say putting a shock in there would be unnecessary. One thing I like about the new box design is that it isnt carpeted. On the old box, its shallow depth and narrow width meant that the treble hooks on your lures would often snag when hooked to your reel. I was able to adjust how I stowed my tied-on bait to reduce the frequency of the problem, but taking the carpet out would seem to make it that much easier to deal with the more compact space of a convenient 3rd rod box. (Dont forget the original Jag had only one full size box!)Cheers,Scott
Just checking to see there is any news about the progress of the Bobcat? Still sidelined?God bless,Scott
A Caracal with a 150…. yum.
Is that a little photoshoppin I see behind the head of that bass?Hehe. Good pic.Cheers,Scott
10 years or more since I saw one, and I still have never seen an aluminum bass boat with as nice a console– all fiberglass and either in raspberry or blueberry metal flake. Even though other aluminum bass boat manufacturers have made dramatic improvements in recent years, they still dont have the polish and functionality of those consoles from the BCB aluminum boats. Imshifti3– something tells me if you see one pop up on the “for sale” forum on here, youll be competing with a lot of guys to snatch it up (maybe even with me!)Cheers,Scott
Regarding greed– people USED TO have to do a lot of things for food. Were fortunate that times have changed and even the poorest among this country have many far more economical ways to find sustenance than fishing for bass, regardless of what might have once been acceptable. Even in my short lifetime, I can remember a time when we occasionally ate bass for dinner because we needed the cheap meal. The fact is, now, it simply costs too much to catch bass in a freshwater lake (boat, gas, equipment, time, etc.) for any argument to justify doing that as opposed to the many alternatives we now have for feeding ourselves and our families. Even in these troubling economic times, its important for the future of our fisheries that we not lose perspective on the sheer prosperity of this country. We truly do live in the land of milk and honey, and were blessed not to have any understanding (for the most part) of the very cruel realities of widespread hunger and starvation. We must always be good stewards of our resources and let nothing, including what we once accepted as necessary behavior, get in the way of that.
Looks like a smallie, but its harder to tell without seeing the fish in profile. The jaw of a smallmouth bass will not extend behind the back of the fishs eye. So, when looking at a bass from the side, if you drew an imaginary line straight down from the back of the eye, the jaw would not go beyond that line. Ive caught smallmouths before that had the coloration of a largemouth, but that can be affected by habitat. The two species are named based on the physiology of the mouth. Either way, a 2.5 pound bass is a nice catch!Cheers,Scott
Is he the same Jon Storm that used to own Storm Lures before it was sold to Rapala? Seems like I know his name from somewhere else too, but I cant think of where.
FTDoo7 wrote:Sorry guys this didnt come from bass fan website or jon storm , i got a call from a friend who is at the ICAST show who has been a friend of earls for the past 25 yrs that is still in the boating industry . Whether this happens tom or not who knows and whether earl has anything to do with the deal or not he didnt really go into details about it , all we can do is see what transpires within the next few days or weeks.Sounds good, FTDoo7. Platinum Equity (who bought the Genmar brands) probably isnt in the bass boat game for the long haul, so Id look for those brands to be sold yet again in another 5 years or so. Going to be hard for those brands to get any traction in that situation. Rick was right, though, about the info being on BassFan. Check out the post from yesterday here: http://bassfan.com/docktalk.asp?archive=7/13/2010. Cant say I agree with their assessment of the idea of Ranger and BASS getting back into bed together as a good thing, but otherwise, this sounds pretty solid if you heard the same info from another source.Cheers,Scott
Brian – My dad, Hugh Crumpler, will be fishing the Open up there. Ill tell him to keep his eyes peeled! If you see a red & pewter Puma FTD with a 250 SHO on it – thats him.Cheers,ScottLast edited by Scott Crumpler on July 17th, 2010, 4:19 am, edited 1 time in total.
Not sure yet – I havent talked to him since he headed up there a few days ago. Ill ask him when I call him later. Do you know if the south end has a stronger concentration of largemouths, or vice-versa?
Brian -Many thanks for the info. There is currently no off-limits period for the BASS Opens like there used to be years ago. The 3 days prior to the tournament (Mon-Wed) are “official” practice days, but you can fish the lake any day before that.Cheers,Scott
