Thrust washer failure / Inspection

The thrust washer cracked and seperated in two pieces on my 250 Yamaha. It also let the prop eat into the lower unit housing. Before we go there I didnt hit anything, run a ground, and the prop never left the water. It looked like it had been over heated. Has this happand to anyone else? If the prop nut is loose I would carefuly inspect the thrust washer. ThanksJim

We have never seen this issue on a Yamaha. One would assume it is the right thrust washer? If this is a rig within warranty, we would have our dealer look at this issue. BCB

I had it happen on my Merc 200 EFI years ago at Lake Dardanelle-cracked washer and prop goes in. Didnt hit anything that I knew of either. I figured I didnt have the prop nut as tight as I should have.. Sorry, guys. Dont know the specific cause, but I just incase…I have always tightened my prop nut down to firm by holding the blade by hand, then placed a block of wood between the prop and the lower unit and tighten it down to the next even tab or flat on the lock washer. It is never too loose that way, and as long as I keep a good breaker bar in the boat (I do) I can still use that adrenalin surge to break it loose to change a prop on the river while standing on a sandbar if I need to. –Bob La Londe Forums, Free Lures, Product Reviewswww.YumaBassMan.com CNC Molds N Stuffwww.CNCMOLDS.com

Any time I have removed and replaced a prop I have always torqued it to Specs. In this case I hadnt done anything to it other than check it like I always do after a day of fishing. I normally will give it a shake or two and spin it when I am hooking up my straps and will also look to make sure the kotter key is still in the prop nut.

Jim, I noticed youre from Virginia. This is in fact a known Yamaha issue by some. I recommend contacting Robbie Patterson at Propeller Dynamics http://www.sandersonpropeller.co…sProp.htmlRobbie replaced my thrust washer earlier in the year and apparently just in time as I was showing premature wear as you described.
