Yes, your livewell should have held water in the Auto position, you may have some debri stuck in the valve keeping it open, I’d try backflushing it in Auto and draining it in Empty. Empty keeps water from coming in and drains what’s there. I doubt if you hurt your pump, I’m about half deaf and have left the bilge pump run for hours with no discernable damage to it.
