MK trolling motor shaft length?

I am going with an minn Kota terrova with Ipilot on my cat and am not sure of the shaft length to get.It is going on a 1999 pantera classic (19 foot). My current TM is a motor guide and I think if I am measuring it correctly is a 42 inch shaft, I keep it as low as it will go in the water. I have read that a lot of people like a longer shaft on the terrova to make it easier to get it back in the boat, but not sure if I should go to the 54 inch shaft or with the 45 inch.Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated, and any one who has one installed let me know what length you bought.Thanks a bunch!Greg

I dont know anything about the terrova, but my 52″ maxxum pro is too long on my PIV. I would love having a 45″. However it may be different with the terrova.- Chaz

Greg, have you used one of the terrovas? The only reason I ask is I had one on my lake trout boat and hated it for bass fishing, good for trolling, but slow to respond in direction changes. Mike

My buddy got one last year and he loves it, we dont tournament fish any more and the trees around our lakes are all but disappearing. The Ipilot feature really works and I can actually sit down and fish with the Ipilot no matter the wind. I take my wife and dad out some each year and being able to leave the front deck to help them out is great. (dad is 76 yrs old and has trouble getting up and down). I used to be the one that just had to be in the front of the boat and in complete control of the TM, but as I age and my back gets worse, I am trying to slow down and just enjoy being out and fishing. The Ipilot makes it a lot easier on me! My buddy put a 45 inch shaft on his 17 foot nitro and it is fine, but I am not sure of the difference in my larger boat.

I run a 99 Classic with the Maxxum 101 , 45″ inch shaft . — Works great !! — Always had Motorguides before this , and didnt know if Id like the M/K , but it would be hard to go back now .

If you fish a lot of open water in rough conditions go with the 52″, if you fish a lot of shallow water or usually only fish on the calm side of the lake go with the 45″.

I have a 52″ Fortrex on a 2011 Couger, and wish I had the shorter one. I can not open the rod locker when the motor is not deployed. One thing I love on this Fortrex is the hydraulic assist—very cool. Ok, I sound like an old manMy 2centsBill

You need the 45″ shaft for more normal conditions.
