Setup/Prop input?

Hey just got my new cat out on the water (new to me) 2006 Classic w/ 2004 200 3L. I wanted to see if I could get some input from those of you that have been there. I am curently turning a 26″ Trophy. 1st trip (38 degree water) out was 73.8mph @ 5800R w/ myself 1/2 tank gas livewells full. But the chine walk was out of this world and I know I know seat time but this was a little accessive. It was 3.5″ below pad so i moved it up to 3″ below pad. 2nd trip (40 degree water) Chine is now perfect you have to drive it but that is what I love about my kitty! Raising the motor cost me about 1.5 MPH (empty 72.3) and now im all over the rev limiter (5900). Next run Fully loaded 2) people 325# and 275# (WOW what a load!) 33 gal of fuel and livewells full & gear 70.8 MPH and STILL in the rev limiter w/ just a little touch of chine. Oh yeah hole shot is still Great 3.5 sec to level. (was 2.4 before moving the motor and empty) My question is can this rig turn a 27″ trophy? Sounds a little much to me but I have access to run a 27″. OR I am considering having my prop B&B & add a little cup. I am planning on sticking to the trophy because it has performed well for me in the past plus I do not have access to run a fury. No youre not going to be able to turn a 27p Trophy. Maybe a 27 Tempest at best, but with the load youre talking about not likely. Losing 1.5 mph on top end is due to raising the engine on the jack plate too high. The boat is now running flatter and youve lost some bow lift. The rpms picked up due to prop slip. Bow lift and prop slip go hand in hand. The flatter you run, the more prop slip. Personally, I would learn how to drive the boat, then lower the engine, and once you get it figured out your top end speed will be at least 1 mph more and possibly even more. Would surprise me the least bit to see at least 75+ out of this one.

Phil, Thanks for the input Ill give it a try dropping it back down 1/4″ and see how it goes first. The handling of the boat is much better than I expected at 3″ below the pad. I do have a simple question for you. I have read where you mention “steering torque” then back down a 1/4″. Well can you define steering torque you speak of? This is my first rig with hydro steering I cannot believe how easy it is to drive. That being said I have nothing to compare to it is 1000% better than the old cables. Its a little firm on left turn at WOT but I figured this is norm do to prop rotation torque. Do I need corrected? Thanks, Jay

Jay, You definitely increased slippage and should have gained torque at the higher setting. Lower the engine at least a quarter and if you only went up a quarter we would lower it one half inch. Take your time learning and till you door a good wheel man drives this rig you will not know the potential. Once you are able to handle it then you can work on set up. Till then nothing will add up.
