The application is not as simple on a 96 as lowering it to todays standards. The boats, engines and propellers were much different in 96 than those not 14 model years later. The only indication as to the amount of engine height is still steering wheel torque. If you have lots of torque, then you are too high. If you have no torque on top end, then you are probably too low. An engine too low tends to do what we term belly walk. The nose of the boat is all in line with the upper propeller blades and the hull rocks on itself. The propeller does not have bite, and thus you get belly walk. This is not Chine walk. Chine walk is actually not chine walk either. It is motor mount flex and propeller slippage on top that must be controlled. Since this is a 96 and someone probably drove it before, you need to figure out if it was set up as you received it. Then go from there to either learn or set up the rig.
thanks for getting back with me so fast the next day on the lake will be learing the setup and engine height also learning how to use my new lowrance gps and graph i got last night. cant wait.
The skeg you will not notice being there. That engine does not use a skeg as a big V hull does. The answers are hard, though where are you located at? BCB

We were hoping you were closer to someone who could help. There are not a lot of options in KS for good HQ help. Hmmm? How about lets try going faster with the trim down just a bit to free the nose, and work the trim to speed up. Dont use the throttle to accelerate, use the trim and increase trim to where you can handle it in steps. We are not sure the engine is not a little low, though we would want the actual engine height according to the directions in the FAQ section.
thanks for the reply , I will give it another try. Love the cat never own another brand.
my cougar is chine walking at 72-75 very bad.. should i raise or lower my jack plate, it is still in stock position from when i bought it. thanksskip
It sounds like youve been trimming too much and need to learn that Bass Cat hulls, old and new, all run based on the trim more than the throttle. The throttle provides power and the trim the ability to use the power. If you overtrim then you will have more happening too fast and trim in small stages of bumps with a bump every 1/4 mile or more. Dont jam the trim and think its developing speed, it takes a mile or so to develop the performance. There are chine walking aids in the FAQ section we suggest you read and many threads on the topic. There is hull angle, rubber motor mounts, propeller slippage, hydraulic steering fluid flow, steering hose expansion, air movement and more going on here, let alone your skill level to drive it. It takes time and even though a 1997 model doesnt use as much to reach top end as a 2017 does it still has some of the characteristics. What boats have you owned prior to this? BCB
Ive had a nitro, procraft and a ranger. Ive never experienced this before. They all had a 200 hp or greater.I was getting 72mph yesterday when i ran it but the walking was just to much. the ass of the boat felt like it wasnt even on the water almost like it was sliding to one side or the next.Last edited by vcjoker on May 23rd, 2017, 12:41 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Since we are talking 1997 model we feel those other boats were older also. None of those designs would have challenged your driving like this and most likely wouldnt achieve similar performance. You do appear to be over trimming and we still suggest you read the FAQ section topics related to this. http://basscatowners.yuku.com/directory
it can be very frustrating and only time in the saddle or another person who is intimately aware of the cause can help.
As stated above , check the forum archives for chine walking . — There is an EXCELLENT video in there to watch . — Chine walk is nothing more than physics at work , and SEAT TIME / SEAT TIME / SEAT TIME is your best friend . — As bwp stated , if you have someone with a Basscat that can ride with you , or drive your boat while you observe , it can shorten the learning curve considerably . — Not a difficult thing to overcome at all . — Just take your time , and enjoy your new to you Kitty . — Hoss

This is a different beast compared to the other boats you owned.I believe as others have stated, your over trimming.Get the boat moving. Push the power to wide open. Slowly bump up the trim. You will feel the boat get up on pad as it continues to accelerate. Remember, this is small trim bumps. If it starts to chine, bump the trim down till it stops. If you still have more RPMs left, your next step is to learn to drive the chine. All high Performance bass boats will tend to chine at upper speeds.
