chips in hull

the bend beat up my old white sabre pretty bad this past weekend. got stuck on one bad log and ended up with two 1/4 inch diameter chips in the bottom of the hulls gelcoat/fiberglass. i can see black through the chip holes… should this concern me, and if so, what is the best way to do temporary repairs until i can get boat to a glass shop ?

The 2002 models were pure Vinyl Ester resin and not much risk involved like newer boats on water jacketing. You should patch the area, however it shouldnt bethemend of the world (hull) if you dont.

but one more question….is MARINE TEX a product, or place (repair shop) ?

It is an epoxy product, though not a gelcoat. You can simply order gelcoat and slip it on the area to protect it. Gosh would we really like to have this Vinyl Ester resin back. It made some great, albeit expensive, boats!

Evercoat makes a repair kit that is super easy to use and match color.If you want to take the time and effort you can sand it and do a very professional looking job.

I have mixed catalyzed black gel from BCB and black marine tex together at times- works well. Marine tex is slighly gooeyer? than gel in the set up and sands a little different but for a hull thats what I have and would do.With BCB black gel you get the color you want and the marine tex is cake to set up- its a two part epoxy so the ratios of catalyst and ambient temps that affect gel dont apply so much.C.O.D. Would a 2000 Sabre have the pure vinyl ester as well? Just curious I used marine tex on mine to fix a chip.
