Fishing Question – Spinnerbaits

I was out on Bull Shoals this weekend chunking and winding a spinnerbait. I caught several short fish and had 20 fish or so that would just either hit the blades or short strike the bait (oh yea, by tha way, I did have a trailer hook). We did catch one fish with just the blades…It was caught behind his gill plate (kind of strange). What (in your opinion) is the best way to hook up on the short striking fish? I tried different spinnerbaits that day and it was the same scenario (short strikes).

Usually if I am getting “short strikes” I do a couple of things. One is I just let the blade die after the hit and then just pop it a couple of times, the other is I change my retrieve speed. Two tricks may help: Switch to smaller blades. You may have tried this when you used different spinnerbaits. Sometimes color makes all the difference. A lot of times when Im hooking fish outside of their mouth on a spinnerbait or crankbait I can change colors and all the next fish will have the lure in the back of their throats. Plus, you may consider changing style of blades as well. I pretty much stick with tandems for the extra flash but will go to single blade when I see others throwing tandem without success. I like throwing the 3/8 oz or less (usually 1/4 oz) baits until water gets real cold, then move to slower baits. I agree with all the others: COLOR, DEPTH, SIZE and SPEED. All are key but when you find the magic color, size, depth and speed, youll be culling very quickly and often. I fish allot of spinner baits and have several different types and styles that I know work under given situations. This could open up a can of worms…..I am sure everyone has their little wrinkle on this. u can change the blade size and maybe the color also

I probably would have switched over to a crankbait or jerkbait. Just experiment with a couple of colors and sizes until you zero in on what they want. This of course is just my opinion and most likely has no validity at all. Hope you get em next time.
