I had the same trouble with my maxxum . — Before you try the ground wire on the skeg , make sure you test for transient voltage in the motor case . — I found out the hard way ( $200.00 for a control board ) that the positive brush holder lead had made contact with the motor case on the inside . — Motor will still work fine , but when you hit the power it sends voltage out through the case . — If this has heppened to yours , as soon as you start the motor with the new ground wire hooked up it will let all the magic smoke out of the control board . — Thats when you say “OOPS” and get out your checkbook . —
