Hello All. I just got a Christmas present. Lowrance Elite 7 CHIRP sonar/charplotter. A few questions. Do you recommend installing on the console or the bow. I plan on getting another unit in the future as the wife got me this one. If i put on dash will the transducer go on the transom or inside the hull or the jack plate? I was thinking of putting it on the bow as once i get close to the area i want to fish i will be using this unit 80 – 90 % of the time. If anyone has pictures of a transom mounted transducer can you include them or more info. Does anyone have any advice on this unit. It came with Navionics gold card. Thanks for your help. I have an Elite7 and an Elite7 w/CHIRP on a 98 Sabre. I have console ducer mounted on transom. Did this because I was able to use same holes from old ducer. I would not do thru-hull, youll lose image quality. I think Lowrance even has that as the last option. Since both styles of Elites use the same hardware and transducers I can interchange them front to back. I would say CHIRP is more useful on the console looking for fish on ledges than staying on fish while trolling. FYI make sure you are up to date on software. Early versions had bugs that caused them to freeze and lag in updating maps while on plane. These all got fixed and it works great now. Good affordable choice in my opinion
Hello.. Thanks for your information Is your transducer in the middle or off to the side . Have you got any interference on the trolling motor unit from the motor. Thanks. Brian Chance
Off to the side, just inside first rib on hull. No trolling motor interference that I can notice. I am new to the better electronics, so I am no expert on settings. If I fish a spot that I know has structure I can see it and the fish really well with either units. The CHIRP does separate fish better.
Here are some pics of the installation of a regular 2D transducer on the transom. One is a Lowrance and one is a Bird, but you will notice that on both the actual install position is on the step and not actually on the transom. One of these was mine, and this type of install produced a clearer and higher speed reading than the original through hull shoot. If your unit has the DI transducer, then the position for that DI transducer would be best mounted on the jackplate.
Hello. Thanks Catdude for the pictures. The new unit has Down Imaging. Transom Shield and Saver makes a side plate for the jack plate and a nice shield for the transducer i am thinking about getting to protect it. This is all new to me and it is replacing the old 7520 pinpoint unit or my Garmin 240 on the bow. I believe i should have a much better look under the water. I just can not afford the bigger HDS with structure scan. Thanks for your help. Brian Chance 99 P – 3
Catdude I got a question. How is the depth and sonar reading with a jackplate mount? Wouldnt the ducer be out of the water when underway? Might be a dumb question but I have always wondered and never thought to ask until now. I do not mean to highjack the thread.

Yes, the transducer is out of the water when on plane and you lose the bottom reading. I assume its the same with Lowrance but I know with Humminbird, they sell a selector switch and a “Y” cable so that you can mount a shoot thru the hull transducer in the bilge and use the switch to select which transducer you are using at any given time. We would prefer the transducers mount left side as the entering propeller blade needs clean water. Plus the transducer in one of the pictures is too low.
