MD – Prop selection 2005 Puma, 225 pro xs Mercury East coast

Fish lakes at sea level MD, VA, DC. Wanted to see what prop is recommended for good hole shot and handling at sea level. Getting on plane quick is important in shallow water with grass. 70+ top end is fine. Will have average load, dual console, 2-3 people. Also, how much would 1200elev at Deep Creek lake make a difference?I have seen 26 Fury is common, some 27 Fury or Tempest or 26 Trophy Plus but dont know if sea elevation is big concern.

I am running a 25 Fury on my 06 Puma DC with 225 Pro XS. With two anglers about 180 lbs each, full live wells and fuel I see 68-70 with BPS on board. Same anglers and 20 gals fuel in saddle tanks and live wells empty 71-72. Best I have done alone 74.2. I have run four different props on this boat a 26 Trophy Plus, 27 Tempest Plus, 26 Tempest Plus and the 25 Fury is by far the best all around prop. Holeshot is amazing!

Thanks PumaDave. I am still learning what the pitch gives you and certainly wasnt thinking 25 so good I asked the question. Sounds like the lower pitch is needed because 225 is working to push. What RPMs for conditions above do you see?Also ever tried any tubing or family stuff with the 25F?

I too did alot of research and everything I read said to go 1″ less in pitch on a Fury from the Tempest I was running (26p Tempest) See if you can find a local Merc dealer that will let try one. In the cooler weather I was hitting 5850-6000 RMPs. I the summer I drop to 5740 RPM. If you cant find one you can try mine its in perfect condition.

25 Fury is a beast. Great prop. Its my summer prop on my 02 cougar/250 yamaha. It pulls fat people in tubes all day long. I also get great top end out of the 25. Bonus

Owner currently has 26 Fury on it in Midwest and has not run a 25 but has tried Tempest and Trophy at 26 and 27. Tempest 26 supposedly ran good but Fury preferred. Supposedly also tried a Tempest 25 and lost on both ends so it sounds like 25 Fury may be the choice. All around performance also sounded like Trophy would be good for backup. I am near Baltimore, MD so will be at sea level freshwater most of the time. I think the sea level should be more of a benefit for all around performance not to mention lower humidity most of the year.I will see if I can find marina who reps Mercury nearby to try (1) 25 Fury (2) 26 Fury (3) 26 Trophy and do a deal.Any idea/location to pickup almost new 25 Fury? Price?

Test run with 26 Fury and 2 people, gas, no water in live wells was 75 gps at 5900RPM. Hole shot pretty good. 60 deg air. Hopefully before thanksgiving can get another run with 25 Fury to see if holeshot is better.

I was running a Fury when I had my Jaguar/225 Optimax, Im at 2400 feet altitude and found the 25 Fury to be great until the day got hot and livewells got full. If you dont like the holeshot with the 26, I bet the 25 is going to be the ticket and best of both worlds. Mike

Getting 2005 puma with 225 pro xs next week. Been away from piloting bass boat for 10 years but sure ready to get back.I am going to try a 25 Trophy Plus as I think BCB ships boats new with 25s. See a lot of 26 Fury and Trophies but seriously considering the 25 Fury.I understand 4 blade is better bite for hole shot and control but dont know is that is all around best performer.Why choose a 4 blade prop over 3 blade? Which prop type and blade count is best for control with good overall performance?

I ran both on my Jag/225 and found the Fury to be better on mine, better holeshot, better loading, didnt notice any difference in handling.
