Tagged: Engine lug
I recently had my 05 200hp 3.0L efi rebuilt. It only had 220 hrs on it, injector failed, which melted a piston. The mechanic said the crank was also bad, which he believed to be from lugging the engine. I mainly ran a 26P fury. The 26 fury still does great but I don’t usually run it at 70 mph. I tried a 24 tempest plus but this is not near enough prop. I am thinking about a 25 fury or fury 4. What do you guys think? I am looking to decrease top end, pick up hole shot, and better handling, and keep rpms up while running slow to keep from lugging the engine.
The engine is on a 2005 pantera classic.
25 Fury should work and some of the 3.0 engines had crank issues, we don’t think lugging it was the issue. Turn it on the Rev limiter and you should be fine. If it only turns 5600 or less it could be over propped.
25 fury in 3 or 4 blade?
I run a 25 Fury 3 blade on my 2005 and the hole shot is great. She will get on down the lake as well great prop.
Thanks. My 26p fury was money until I added the ultex and talon. Hole shot suffered, but not bad. I think a 25p will be what I need. Just can’t decide between the fury 3 blade or 4 blade. I don’t mind losing top end for better hole shot and handling if the 4 blade can do that.
Guys, if you are running a 3.0 EFI you should definitely try a Trophy Prop. A 27″ trophy was/is one of the best props mercury ever made and was perfect for a lightly loaded Classic/P-II. If you are loaded heavily with one of the new trolling motors and power poles or Talons then try a 25″ Trophy.
When I had my 3.0 liter on my 2001 Classic I ran a 27″ Trophy most of the time and a 26″ Fury was a good prop as well. I could see where those would be a little too much if you are heavily loaded so I would agree with BCB’s suggestion of a 25″ Fury. I would just add that you should try the Trophy. It really was an overall great performer on those models and those engines.

Tough to beat the hole shot of the Fury however.
Thanks, I have a 26p trophy but I bought it used. The previous only had extra cup put into the blade. I think I should have it reworked to original shape. The extra lift seems to make the rear loose.

The 26 Trophy should work well. If the rear feels loose, raise the Jack Plate 1/4 inch and see if that goes away.
