Tagged: Repower
I lost a cylinder on my 05 Mercury 3.0L EFI and was thinking about repowering with either the new 3.4L or 4.6L 4 stroke Mercurys. What do you guys think on which would be better. I know the 3.4 is 30 lbs lighter, but I’m not sure if the lighter weight would make up for the displacement of the 4.6L. I was also considering a 4-stroke Suzuki 200hp because I think they may be a little cheaper, but I do not know if there would be any cost savings because I could not use my Mercury controls already in place.
Well, you have a decision to make based on several factors. The cost may be one of them but that’s a personal one that only you can consider. I can’t speak to the 3.4L motor but I can say that the 4-stroke ProXS would be a great choice. It it a great motor so far for me. I am very satisfied with it on my P2. I have nothing bad to say about the Suzuki but you have to consider if you have a good service center near by that can support it. I would stay with Mercury and just decide between the 3.4L or the 4.6L. as both will work with your Mercury controls. I think the 4.6L will offer the best performance and resale value for your boat in the future.
I was leaning that way and I do not know of any Suzuki dealers around Bossier City. Thanks JEH.
There ain’t much price difference on the V6 and V8 200 engines.
Personal opinion is: buy what you can get fixed anywhere. Tons and tons of Yammie and Merc dealers near and around most lakes. Not so with the other brands. Shame to miss a day or weekend of fishing when you need a 20 dollar part and a mechanic. been there.
As mentioned, access to good service is key. Also, there would be a significant difference for changing the controls and cabling if switching from Mercury.
Being you had a 3.0L 2-stroke you will be disappointed in the 3.4L 4-stroke as it doesn’t make as much torque. It’s makes similar torque as the 2.5L 2-stroke. The “200hp” 4.6L being a ProXS is pushing the 10% rule as it’s a detuned 300hp with a smaller throttle body(restrictor plate), I don’t think the 200 3.4L is making 220hp based on the CARB reports. The only other outboard I’d recommend is the 200hp 4.2L SHO, though it’d be even more especially considering the need to change controls. The 200hp Suzuki is 2.9L 4cyl 4-stroke and that’s going to be similar in torque to my 3.0l 150hp Mercury 4-stroke, even though my Sabre FTD is about the same weight as your Classic if I could have more torque for when the boat is loaded down in the heat of summer I would. When solo in the winter it’s great, but that’s why I’m considering the repower to the 3.4L Pro XS 175. Thought I’d be content with 150, being I grew up in a Classic with 150 though it had the big at that time 2.7L 2-stroke Suzuki which was a detuned 225 and definitely pushing the 10% rule.
