What brand, weight, type of vinyl is used for Bass Cat seats? I would like to use the same, as the original vinyl held up very well. I think the boat was over 10 years old when some of the seams started going, and most of the pieces themselves were still good. Before anybody says, just buy them from BCB. They dont seem to offer the vinyl for sale. They offer complete seats, but it doesnt seam like the they offer just the vinyl for my seats. Atleast not on the website. If they do then somebody please post a link. Ill be replacing the middle seat (which is actually still intact) with the carpeted box. Ive got the “bucket” seats in a 2004 Cougar FTD. I actually dont care much about the embroidered name or even exact color scheme matches. I just want quality vinyl I can get another ten years out of. Well I did buy my replacement carpet from them for much the same reason. It was over ten years old before it got any wear holes. Some years Ive owned the boat its been on the water 3-5 days a week, and some only 3-4 a month, but its never been a garage queen. Its seen a lot of sunlight, one wreck, and being ignored in a dealers backlot gathering dust and bleaching in the sun while nothing was being done. Its a beater now, but its a good beater. Id like to freshen up the seats and already have the carpet from BassCat. I removed the old carpet from the boat. The doors have all been removed, and Ive got the front deck stripped of glue. Still need to strip the carpet off the doors and stripe the glue from the sole and back deck. The Vinyl used today is Syntec brand in various styles and is better than your original Vinyl.
I called a couple shops today to get a rough quote on covering my two seats in the 08 Cougar and specified Syntec. One shop told me they didnt have access to that brand material and the other shop used it exclusively. Both shops were within $25 bucks of quotes. The highest being $700. I can get brand new BCB seats with the carpeted step box for $815. I will gladly pay the extra $115 just to get the BCB embroidered on the seats…Butch P
Morbern, General and other brands of marine Vinyl are available. The quality of Syntec comes through on every test weve run.
I appreciate that some folks still have plenty of money. There was a time when I had plenty of money too. Unfortunately I barely survived the stock market crash and depression that start the end of 2005. I did ok until about 2008, but then it was brutal for a few years. If I had more cash Id just buy a new boat. Seriously. At nearly a grand after shipping for 2 seats and a box Ill have to pass on replacing seats that arent bad in favor of re-upholstering them. I did say Id buy the box anyway. LOL. Sadly a cursory search isnt showing a lot of retail sources for Syntec vinyl, although Syntec carpet seems to be plentiful. I guess Ill have to use one of the less robust brands and plan to have to replace it again in another ten years. Great Lakes Skipper shows one color available on Ebay, but nobody else seems to want to say what brand of vinyl they are selling. I wasnt planning to have somebody reupholster the seats for me by the way. Im a fair hand with a heavy duty sewing machine. Ive done car seats, jackets, and even a few boat seats many years ago. While its not my best skill its within my skill set. My dads 24 SeaRay still has upholstery in it we did almost 20 years ago. Then again that boat is kind of a garage queen seeing daylight only a few times a year. (well storage building queen)Now stripping this carpet glue is being a bit of a bear. A test spot with Kleen Strip adhesive remover shows it will remove the gelcoat as well. Regular mineral spirits isnt even touching the glue. Even after soaking for half an hour. Well it is softening up the stuff I could probably scrape off anyway, but the main base of glue is hardly affected. I hate to sand or grind as it gets into the gelcoat as well. Next to try is the Henrys adhesive remover I guess. I am not impressed with the reviews though. A few people have raved about it for marine carpet glue, but most said it didnt even touch their application. Well the mineral spirits do seem to be softening the glue. Its still not easy to scrape off the glue, but its “easier.” Bob La LondeWorks with his handswww.CNCMOLDS.com–Bob La Londe Forums, Free Lures, Product Reviewswww.YumaBassMan.com CNC Molds N Stuffwww.CNCMOLDS.com
Bob I used a air grinder with the small abrasive wheels just be easy on the hand when doing it
i ordered all six peices to recover the seats in my 1990 p2. looked great, and were easy to recoverbrad
Bob I used a air grinder with the small abrasive wheels just be easy on the hand when doing it Ive been soaking with mineral spirits and scraping with a gasket scraper with decent results. Then using a wire wheel in a pneumatic die grinder for the tough spots. Its slow going, but its working. My toughest area is going to be the sole. I dont bend and move like I used to.–Bob La Londe Forums, Free Lures, Product Reviewswww.YumaBassMan.com CNC Molds N Stuffwww.CNCMOLDS.com
