Tempest plus VS Fury question

I run a 24 tempest plus for hole shot but can run my 25 fury in cold weather……recently switched to the Fury and noticed a little bit of a sqirmming feeling. The tempest does not do that. Is the engine height a little too high for the Fury ? For info the jack plate is about 3/4 inch above flush Any opinions welcome…perhaps a good question for Phil Addison as he seems to be very knowledgeable on setups. You are rite, PA should know the best set up. From my experience the Fury likes to run lower than the Tempest. On my Puma FTD, the jackplate is even at the top with the Fury. Seems to be my best set up for all around performance. Good hole shot and top end is over 80 with the 26 Fury in cool weather. I run a 25 Fury in the summer.

Im not sure what you mean by squirming feeling. Though I will say that a Fury usaually needs to be ran at a lower jack plate setting. However, a 25 Fury is a larger wheel by a lot than a 24 Tempest. Both these props are typically small for your engine unless youre running super large loads, running at a high elevation,or youre running a new Torquemaster gear case on a 2012-2014 model boat. Please provide year model boat, motor, and top end rpms and top end speed. It could be that the Tempest is allowing bow to ride in the water and the Fury is not. By the way, Im not a very big fan of a Tempest prop!

Phil , my cougar FTD is a 2010 model. The 25 Fury came with the boat ( bought slightly used ) Engine height was very high and had very strong torque….also poor hole shot. Would not plane in warm weather if the livewell was mostly full and Im not a tournament angler so I dont think the load is excessive. Normal old man stuff….rods , reels , tackle , 4 batteries one power pole and normally 12 / 14 gallons in each tank. The Tempest helped a lot on hole shot. The Fury does fine in cool / cold weather and Ive seen 6100 plus rpm ( with the 25 ) although I rarely run more than 5500 rpm as I dont really need to go 75 MPH….getting too old for that.Just for info , what is it about the tempest that you are not so fond of ? BTW ..The feeling might have been better described as the rear of the boat kicking out a little bit….maybe like the prop loosing its bite.Thanks You. My last two 20 footers have both had 26 Furys. Like Mainliner, I have had the best overall performance with the plate flush, so you may be a little high for a Fury with yours. Good holeshot and top end for me with the plate flush.

I would start off by lowering the engine on the jack plate until you get rid of most the steering torque. Make sure any and all the plastic plugs are removed from the hub of the prop. The effect holeshot and holeshot only. Target top end rpms between 5850 and 6000 rpms. Make sure you dont over trim.Tempest props are usually not the best for top end on your boat, have a tendency to blow out very easy in rough water, and are not usually the best for holeshot.Fury props are usually better for holeshot, better for top end, and hold water very well for rough water.Trophy props are usually the best for top end, hold water good in rough water, but hole shot is not good.Does you boat have a hot foot?

I lowered engine height right after I got the boat……I now have Very little steering torque…excellent bow / hull lift using throttle not trim…. as on most or all (? ) Basscats. I use one plug in the Tempest ( wont work with no plugs ) and no plugs in the Fury. Looks like I will have to lower a little bit if I want to run the Fury.Again….Thanks to all !

Ooops…I forgot to say that I do not use a hot foot. I think I know where you were going with that….. I do get full throttle

Could the feeling you are describing mean your fury needs a little work? Get it checked out, mine is due again I think.

I dont think it does…..it has only been run a few times. Not a scratch on it and it was brand new when I got the boat.
