Trailer Brakes locked backing up

Brought home a new Sabre today after a 11 hour round trip to realize that when I back up the trailer brakes lock up. No fuse is blown and I have reverse lights on the truck and trailer. I was able to use the bypass key but obviously this isnt the way it should work. Please help… way to excited about the boat to be let down by the trailer. I bought it from a dealer that is 6 hours away so its not realistic for me to take it back to them.. BCB is only 2 hours from the house… is that an option?

Typically its not the trailer. Likely its the truck wiring. You can check the blue wire as mentioned. What kind of vehicle is it? Previous posts on this subject seem to have more issues with a Ford vehicle from what Ive read. If you are plugging in to the round 7 pin connector on the rear of your vehicle, check the center pin for voltage with the vehicle running & parking brake set and put the transmission in reverse. If no voltage is getting to the center pin more than likely you will have to add a relay to the fuse panel, this is found to be more of a problem on vehicles that were ordered by the dealer without the heavy tow packages, or the dealer did not install the relay in the vehicle when getting it ready for the sale, as some dealers nowadays just send the vehicle to the closest car wash to get them prepped instead of doing it in house and doing a full checkout like they use to do.

If the reverse light is working then you have a solenoid problem. If it is not working then you have a voltage issue as discussed above.

Its a 2014 Chevrolet Z71 with tow package. Could voltage still be a problem if the reverse lights are working?

Its likely in your connector that attaches to the truck, or its a solenoid. The lock out key should work and allow you to back up.

Any way to check the solenoid without replacing it?

As mentioned ,the blue wire on the trailer is the backup lights and solenoid circuit . Depending on plug type on the trailer, 7way round or flat 5 locate backup circuit. With 12 volt battery jumper the ground with negative and the blue circuit with positive. You will hear a click as the solenoid engages. You can Google the location of the backup position lead on 7way round.

Willhaupt when you picked up your Sabre did it have only the flat plug? Did you have to use a round plug of yours or someone elses? The reason I ask is to check the round plug for the gold pin in the center. You may have the wrong plug? There are some plugs that do not have the center pin and that is what you might need to look at. It should have a gold pin in the center.
