Trolling Motor Problem

Ive had the same problem except mine hasnt slowed to the point of running slowly afterwards. Someone on here should have a fix for it.

Sounds like one of the circuit breakers is tripped and needs to be reset. These should be located at the batteries and have a tit on the side. Push the tit in to reset. If you have a volt meter, check the voltage at the plug. You should be showing greater than 36 volts at the plug. Using a 50 amp breaker will also help alleviate some of this as you cant run these things WOT for long periods of time. It will trip one of the breakers just about everytime.

The breakers can corrode and often require replacement if they start acting up. If there are temp style breakers they do not have a reset and have a coating on them.

Thanks for the responses guys. I will check around to see what type of breakers I have, I have a feeling that they are the temp style and are likely a little corroded. I dont think that it is batteries because they are fairly new and the problem only occurs when Im on high and it goes completely off, not just slows. Before, after a minute or so of running at a lower speed I can increase back up to fairly fast and had no signs of a lack of power. But now its not functioning normally at all. BCB will there be a breaker for each battery? and is there is any way you could post a picture of the temp style breaker so I know what Im looking as Im a little ignorant on electronics. If your breaker is going bad it will not reset completely and will cause the slow speed you are seeing. the likely cause is a dirty connection which caused the breaker to heat up under the load of high speed and then it would reset letting the motor work again, but now it will not reset all the way back and will need to be replaced.

I checked the circuit breaker next to the master switch. That is the only one that I know of.

The harnesses on the batteries should have a 50 or 40 amp breaker on the jumper wires between batteries and the main wires to the panel on the positive leads. These are small black boxes in line and they have a small black button to depress on each end.

I checked the breaker on the “short stop” jumper and it was not kicked. Can you tell me how(where) to measure the voltage at the plug in at the front of the boat. There are 4 openings in the female part of the plug. I am sure at least one of the openings is the ground. What should I have on the other 3 openings?

The is 12.8 v on the terminal post leaving the breaker box.

Best thing to do is jump on the charger MFG web site or the troll motor site (unless you have the manuals) and chech the wiring against the install. SOunds like the dealer did not wire it right. follow the schematic, just like a road map.Milton

You really cant make a mistake, though the issue is in the back if the boat and either a wire is missing on a batt or the main breaker is tripped. As you had power before this episode. It does not sound like you have the main breaker yet.

I found the problem after looking at a wiring diagram of a 36v set up with 3 dedicated batteries. It seems the dealer removed the other jumper when they replaced the bank changer and did not put it back on. I hunted him down this morning and got by old 4 bank back and there was the other jumper. I attached it and everything is working fine. I am going to keep the wiring diagram for future reference. Me and the P4 are going to be on the river at dark 30 in the morning!

Great! We figured it was either that or the breaker. The wrench looked dumb founded when you figured it out we are sure. Everyone makes mistakes, though remember to check the troller, dash components and engine when messing with Batteries. Might have gotten this one right then and there.
