I have a 2005 150 XR6 Sabre. Im thinking of buying a 25 Tempest ( I want a plus right?). What are the differences between Tempest and Tempest Plus? Which do I want? What speeds are you running, and how is your holeshot? Right now my holeshot is awesome, and I have ran top 63.5 mph with Me, full gear and full gas. Running a 23 tempest plus now. Any advice is helpful. ThanksChris2005 Sabre, 150 XR6, Minn Kota Fortrex with Lowrance electronics
The difference between a regular Tempest and a Tempest Plus is the thickness of the blades. The original Tempest props are harder to find because people who have them hold on to them. They are suppose to be a little faster on top end because they have thinner blades than the Plus. Chris
Chris, a 25 pitch prop would probably be too much on a Sabre/150 set-up. I dont know what maximum rpms youre turning with the 23, but youll probably loose 300-400 rpms on top end by going up to a 25 pitch. You want your engine to run at the high end of its maximum rpm range when running wide open. If you went to a 25 pitch and it would turn say 5200-5300 rpms max at WOT, it would be lugging the engine, which causes dangerous detonation, and can damage your engine. As expensive as these props are, I would see if a dealer has a demo Tempest in a 25 that you can try before you buy. Also, your holeshot will be a lot slower with a 25 pitch prop. I switched from a Tempest to a Trophy Plus on my Sabre. In my opinion the Trophy is a great all around prop. You get an improved hole shot, better handling and the Trophy basically eliminates chine walking. Also, the major difference between a Tempest and Tempest Plus(Trophy and Trophy Plus also) is that the Tempest Plus has the adjustable PVS plugs that allow you to dial in your holeshot. Good luck,Kenny
chris I am turning a 25 p tempest plus and love it, it took a while to get hole shot back under control but well worth the effort. I turn 5700 rs and run 67 to 68 gps speeds depending on load and water conditions.I also run one large plug and 2 open holes to get the hole shot which isnt as good as it was with the 23 but still is good.Prop is roughly 2.75 inches below pad.running same motor as you 150 xr6
I have 2004 Sabre 150 Opti no jack plate and I ran both I perfer the 23 temp + over the 25 temp + for its handling the 25 blows out on sharp turns. For top end I dont have to trim the boat up as far with the 25 and it wants to chine walk when I am by myself more so than with A partner.I like to run fast so I learned how to drive the chine walk and no boat with A 150 has been able to touch me .You will gain maybe 5 mph with the 25 temp +.Terry
Thanks for the info Terry.2005 Sabre, 150 XR6, Minn Kota Fortrex with Lowrance electronics
I was reading your post regarding the props for an 04 Sabre.I have the same set-up (04 Sabre with 150 Opti). Are you running a J.P.? What props have you tried? I am running a 23T+ and turning 5700RPMs at 63.5mph.I was wondering what else you have tried and did it make a difference. Thanks,Gerard
I finally had a chance to try the 25 Tempest Plus on my boat. With a full tank of gas, empty livewells, one man, it was turning 6000rpms running 73 gps with a good windchop on the water. Water temp was about 48 with air temp about 46. The holeshot was still acceptable, but not as quick as the 23 Temp Plus was. I only lost about 150 rpms. I thought it would lose more but it did not. I love the way the boat drove with the new 25 prop. It will probably not see the 23 Temp back on the motor unless I have to use it for a backup. Travis
WOW thats incredible Travis. I was hoping it would be a good report. I have yet to hit 6000 rpms with my XR6, you think Im a bit too low on the plate perhaps?? Ill try to tweak it more, maybe this weekend since the weather is good finally. I would love to get those speeds, because I fish alone alot, and dont always run the livewells. What vent plugs do you have in the prop??? ThanksChris2005 Sabre, 150 XR6, Minn Kota Fortrex with Lowrance electronics
I used to turn about 6000 rpms with a 24 tempest plus. speeds in mid 60s. Hole shot was great.
