Cougar / Evinrude 250HO 2011 prop testing…

My buddy just got a 2011 Rude 250HO for his 1999 Cougar and hes trying to find the best prop for the boat… So far, hes tried : – Raker II 26P 3 blade (No top speed)- Powertech 26P 4 blade (No hole shot)- Trophy Plus 25P 4 blade (good ol shot but too small)Ive doing a few searches and so far it seems that the best props for 225 Rudes seems to be Trophy 27-28 or Tempest 27-28… Any recommendations or anyone with a similiar setup?Thanks

I have a 2011 Eyra with a 250 HO. Ive done many prop tests Im sticking with a 28 pitch Raker II Ialso lifted the motor to 2 1/2 below pad. Good top end ok hole shot. It works for me.

I wouldnt use 225 gearcase data to judge this 2011 250HO.Gotta know a few things- which gearcase? Straight leading edge on lower unit with big round cone or is the lower unit an L2 with a cambered skeg and a concave leading edge?If its an L2 case then I would put a 25 fury or 26 fury on it and leave it alone depending on where you live and what altitude you are at.If its an SLE case then I would probably get ready to be frustrated. The prop that works for him will be different for the prop that works for the next guy. Likely the best he will do is a 27 fury based on holeshot and top end throughout the year through all loads. Sure he could spend a mint trying Bravos, hydromotives, mazcos, and who knows what else. Easy to make it hard on this lower unit so dont. Only way to play an SLE unit is to “settle” and hope that that BRP makes up for its poor decision in terms of design for outstanding longevity.C.O.D. Jr. III

Ive had two Cougars with 250HOs and have tested Tempest, Trophy, Fury and Raker props a great deal both on the lightning and new gearcase. By far the best prop is the Fury. It is best on acceration and top-end. The pitch you need will be based on the gear ratio in your lower unit. On a 2009 Cougar FTD with a 2010 250HO I used a 25 Fury in the warm months and a 26 in the cool months. The 1999 Cougar is a bit lighter than the newer FTDs (unless there is an added flipping deck) so it may need a 27. My second favorite is a Trophy (with blow out ring and all PVS plugs open) but the Fury is about 2 miles per hour faster. The Tempest (a modified one) and Raker have decent top ends and nice lift but I dont like the slow speed manners – each has a bit of “slap” and are not as smooth at slow speed. Thanks guys! Much appreciated!I just forwarded the info to him and hes going to confirm with the dealer if he has the L2 or the SLE gearcase but it looks like hell be shopping for a 26 Fury I think.Thanks again!

Just talked with him and its a L2 gearcase or at least the newer one and he does have the flipping deck insert which I find looks heavy as hell! He will be trying a 25 fury soon… we will see how that goes.Thanks again for the help.

Prop her for 6000-6100 rpms, your limiter kicks in at 6200, let that sucker Eat some air, that lower unit can come up on the transom quite a bit, just watch your Water Pressure and Corners at 75+!!!!!Your Signature …

First of all the “newer one” is an SLE. “older one” would be an L2. Ill post pics for you here in a second.Turning a 25 fury 6000 will only happen with 1 guy on board if it is an L2. My best speed in summer with a load is a B&Bd 25 fury(2 guys, water, gas, and a holeshot at 4-5 seconds). If this guy doesnt fish events and wants to haul and doesnt care what his holeshot is Id get a 26 fury.Getting enough rpms on the holeshot is the game.I would also MAKE DAMN SURE that someone has checked the fuel vacuum amount in the fuel lines of that boat. We do fish a few tournaments and would ideally like to get a better hole shot then 4-5 seconds… ScottNagy who posted in this thread has the exact same motor and he seems to be turning a Raker 28 no problem… If im not mistaken hes even going to try a 29 or even 30… is the Eyra that much lighter then a 99 Cougar?! ( Correct me if im wrong Scott).Btw Ward.. sorry for my “newbieness” but whats a B&Bd 25 fury? (blueprinted?)We should be able to try a 25 fury pretty soon but my buddy seems to think hell be better off with a 26 Fury… I will let you guys know what seems to be working the best when we find it… Thanks again!

Scott has an SLE case and the ratio is 1.85:1, an L2 is 1.71 to one and therefore the props chosen are VASTLY different.Also I have a puma FTD which is a far more similar hull to your boat than an Eyra run in Canada where its much cooler than the lower 48.If you need better than a 4-5 second holeshot then your gonna need a smaller prop than a 25 if its an L2 and a smaller prop than Scott runs likely because I imagine his holeshot isnt much better than that.C.O.D.
