Efi vs optimax

Hi, Im looking at two boats. Same year motors. The newer boat (2006) has the efi and the engine has 234 hours. The other boat 2006, the opti has 327 hours. The efi is kinda holding me back. Should it be?

I would not be afraid of an efi at all as long as the compression is good. Personally I believe the efi is the best engine ever built. I have not owned an efi but have friends that have had one for years. One of them is a 98 model 225 that has high performance parts added. Computers, lighter fly wheel, reeds, etc. He drives it like a ticked off teenager all the time and cant blow it up.

Go for the efi. Less parts to break and theyre known to be absolutely bulletproof. As an 06 the efi has the new computer style and therell be less fuel useage difference than you may think. Theyre both considered to be “smog motors”. You didnt share which hp the motors are youre considering? My efi is an 08, has a lot more hours than either one youre considering and has had virtually no service (I do my own maintenance) other than a TPI failure last year. Mine still has brand new compression.

They are both 200 hp.

James – that should be a 3.0L 200 efi – its an absolute beast. Monster lower end torque and a phenomenal motor. Wouldnt hesitate. Both would need to take a trip to the wrench for compression and full diagnostic before I made a final decision.

I had the 2.5 merc on my 95 ranger and it was a very solid motor for sure. the optimax motors are great as well. it goes w/o saying that mercury has their act together.

on a side note however, compression “ALWAYS” seems to be a huge deal, and it is a concern but the leak down on the cylinders should also be a very real concern when checking the motor. my 09 250 optimax has 492hrs w/ 90 psi on each cylinder, which the factory says is still good compression, but the gauge doesnt drop after I stop cranking to check for maximum compression. make sure they check both
