Minn Kota 101 Fortrex problem

I have a new Minn Kota 10l lb trolling motor used maybe a dozen times on my new Cougar FTD. This weekend I was sitting still when I used the motor to move spots and I am guessing it was right by a stump because the collar holding the shaft broke off immediately causing the entire motor to fall in the water. I pulled it out after about 5 seconds or so. I have a great dealer who is taking care of the repair however should Minn Kota handle this as a warranty issue? The foot and shaft seem perfectly fine and it seems the motor should have folded under to prevent any damage instead of the collar breaking off at the hinge of the bracket on the boat. I have never seen this kind of damage before. Thanks for the help.

The bowguard doesnt breakaway unless you hit something hard. It has to be this stiff, else it would break away when you turn the trolling motor. On a side note about the folks at Jones Trolling Motor Service. I have used them twice for parts for my MG. They have been nothing but great in helping me figure out what parts I needed, knew exactly what I needed, were fair in price, and got me my parts ASAP. I would urge any of you out there to use them for parts, repairs or help. Bryan Adams.
