Transducer mounting

I have a 91 Sabre and over the years I have added several transducers to the three it had when I bought the boat. Last week, I installed a Lowrance 522C and it came with the tear drop transducer. I thought I was going to put the puck on the transom, but after I got it , I did not want to put holes in the transom. So I knocked out two pucks from the well where the two bilge pumps are and then bought a shoot through the hull puck locally. It came with the Lowrance epoxy package. Origionally, I had used some 5 minute plastic epoxy to put in the tear drop puck for the sonar unit I was taking off. It was not working consistent. The reason might be that it was not tight to the hull and came up easy when I tapped it a couple of times. An older shoot through the hull puck was really tight to the bottom, and I worried that I could get it out. With my grandsons help, I used a air tool with chisel and carefully cut away the old puck. This left an uneven surface, so I bought a new small vertical air tool that used two inch sanding discs. I then ground the sump well smooth where we took up the two pucks. I cut a small plastic bottle that was just bigger in diameter than the shoot through puck and used it as a dam and coated the puck with the Lowrance epoxy and the rest inside the dam. I eased the new puck inside the dam and weighted it down , I did not put a second puck back in, as I felt I would only use the new Finder/GPS unit. The next day, after the epoxy was well cured, I filled in around the newly installed puck with fiberglass resin. It looks good and the 522 Sonar is working perfectly. When I bought the new shoot-thu-the -hull transducer, the dealer had the Lowance epoxy for sale seperatly. The emoxy did not come with the tear drop transducer, but does come with the shoot through tranducer. I dont know why, because you can mount both in the hull according to the directions. The epoxy works well and I would look for some. It is avaiable on the Lowrance web site also. I got mind at Miller Marine, Ocala, FL but Gander and Dicks did not have it. Caution: Go easy with the air chisel. In the past I have done this by hand with hammer and chisel. The air tool took just a few minutes. This is a lot of detail, but since it worked so well, I thought I would tell the whle story. I now have an extra transom puck for the Lowrance 520/522 series and it should work on most of the newer models. $25 plus shipping if anyone wants to save a buck or two. Skipjack

Yes, you can use that as a thru hull transducer but you will want to pay special attention to making sure it doesnt roll over on its side while setting up in the epoxy. I would want it rear most portion of the hull because the further back you can put it the less likelihood to lose the bottom while running on pad. Mount it with a slow curing epoxy and not a 15 minute epoxy. Judd Lasiter

I just purchased a new Lowrance 522C for my Jag last week and did the thru-hull transducer install this past weekend. I used the “skimmer” teardrop transducer that came stock with the unit inside the hull. It worked out great, I agree with basschaser that you have to watch that it doesnt roll over as the epoxy cures, but it is pretty easy to prevent. I used Marine-tex “Flex Set” epoxy to bond mine in and it turned out S-o-l-i-d with a capital S. This adhesive was recomended by a buddy of mine that works at Pro-Sports marine (builds bluewater boats) here in Lincoln, Alabama. It is what they mount their transducers with there at the factory. I found it for 15 bucks at the local marina. I had to pop out the old thru-hull transdcuer to make room for the new one – I just pried on it with a big pair of channel-locks (it popped loose from the factory adhesive). After I got it out I ground out the area to get to a fresh bonding surface with an 80 grit disk on a die grinder (dont go too deep!). Applied all the flex-set to the transducer and put it in the hull with a brick on it to keep it down while it dried. Take a 1″ board, like a furring strip, and place it against the bottom edge of the transducer, and tap the end of the board, Hard, with a rubber mallet. If this doesnt pop it loose, put a metal bladed putty knife against the bottom edge and tap hard again. The epoxy will crack and the unit will pop out. Funny how some things simple just dont come to mind. I had trouble getting a hammer in the well to tap the old transducer. The hammer did loosen the tear drop transducer, but the round through hull was really in there tight. I hit it with the hammer and got some plastic, I tried a chisel, but did not have good leverage on the hammer. The air chisel went through it in a hurry, but you need to be careful and you have an uneven bottom to smooth. The air 2″ inch sander worked real well, but was dusty. I hope it will be a while before I have to do that again. At least, it is working fine. Skipjack

No, I believe your transducer will be out of the water while on plane with that manual jackplate. You would lose signal while running. It might work while idling, but probably not while running. Good luck KentKent Charles 2002 Pantera Classic & 200 Yamaha VMax

I have a 1991 p2 that I was going to mount a locator on, but I only have the transom mount arrow shaped ducer, can I use this as a thru the hull ? Also I arrow have 2 pucks mounted in the bilge area and was wondering if i could mount it right in front of where the rear pedestal is glassed into the hull? and if so what epoxy /brand would be best? thnx mark

There is an area right in front of the drain plug inside the hull that is open to shoot through. The area is about 6″ x 6″ and there should be a transducer there already. BCB

Sand the puck and use 24 hour epoxy. We would dress the hull also and how much would depend on oil in that area. Clean it up well. BCB
