Trolling motor wiring

Swapped my two troll motor batteries but did not label each wire. Now i am confused as to which goes where. Ther is one red, one white, and two black wires. Hooked the two blacks to negative terminal on each battery. Then hooked red to one positive, and the white to another positive. Troll motor will not work, and circcuit breaker flips off. Need advice please.

Is yours 24 volt? Ill run out and check mine right quick but I believe I have the red to the positive of the first battery. The white jumper from the negative of the first battery to the positive of the second battery. Both blacks on the negative of the second battery. Ill be back in a few to confirm or edit. Not completely correct. I have a big main white wire to the positive of the first battery. A jumper from the negative of the first battery to the positive of the second battery. A big main red wire and a big main black wire on the negative of the second battery. It sound like you have them crossed. Hook the red or white wire to a battery and then hook one of the two blacks to that battery. Then test for power at the plug at the trolling motor with a volt meter by checking the two slots across from each other like this.If you do not get any voltage after checking both pairs of slots then change the black wire and test again. When you are done you should read 12 volts on both pair of slots. Let me know if you have any other questions, [email protected] .Thanks,Mike

Will try your advice. Based on what youve said, I am hoping that simply swapping the two negative (black) cables will solve problem. Toledo…just to clarify…you dont have two wires on a single battery post, do you?

If you have a 24V TM that means that the two TM batteries should be connected in series. To do this a jumper wire should be connected from negative on one battery to positive on the other. Connect the two wires going to the TM to the other Negative and positive terminals. black to neg. and red to pos. You should read 24V at the TM plug.

Swap the two blacks . — You have 2 separate 12 volt circuits that combine to make 24 , either in the plug of the T/M , or in the pedal housing switch . — Obviously crossed grounds . —

to Cajun catter: You are probably tripping the breaker with the trolling motor plugged in, or when you plug it in. This means the plug jumper is shorting from a neg to pos of the same battery. As said above, either swap the two grounds (black wires), or swap the two hots (white and red).
